Democracy: A political system in which citizens enjoy a number of basic civil and political rights, and in which their most important political leaders are elected in free and fair elections and accountable under a rule of law (26). In the studies we have undertaken, comparing and exploring various countries and systems politically, economically, and psychologically throughout the quarter, this outcry of democracy has prevailed as a main theme. He formed a highly centralized government, which was fu rthered to totalitarian goals by his successor, Joseph Stalin. Stalin focused on military and industrial gains which, by his death in 1953, had â€Å"crippled the Soviet state† because his successors could not make any reforms without undermining the CPSU—the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (367). A heavy reliance on secret police and a militarized economy was already in place when Mikhail Gorbachev came on the scene. He was elected General Secretary of the CPSU in 1985 when the USSR was in middle of continually diminishing economic productivity; it became stagnant. With his powers as secretary, he saw room for reform to change the USSR drastically. He planned to do this through instituting glastnost, or openness, in society, which he believed would ameliorate levels of corruption. Corruption was a detriment to democratization, which he believed would heal the economy. He brought back the first contested elections in many years. With democratic procedures in place , Gorbachev lost his power to Yeltsin. Obesity is a problem that is growing increasingly in the children’s population in the United States. Statistics of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention claims that â€Å"obesity now affects 17% of all children and adolescent in the United States, triple the rate from just one generation ago†. The doctors say that this medical condition is easiest to detect by weighing yourselves, which can determine if you have obesity or not. However, its treatment turns out to be very difficult for adults, and even more for children because the children need to change the style of life. They need to start eating†¦show more content†¦Therefore, the parents should be more responsible. When they see their children at risk of developing obesity, they should take steps to avoid that this occurs. For example, they should buy foods with less calories and with a low glycemic index because as Dr. Nancy Gottesm an points out, â€Å"Foods with a low- glycemic index (vegetables, fruits, beans, lean proteins, healthy fats, nuts, and minimally processed grains) break down slowly in the digestive system, which makes the eater feel full for a much longer period of time† (Should I Put My Kid On A Diet? 3). Finding commonground in our senses of humor, and love of the TV Simpsons, we grew acquainted with each other. Later in the year we teamed up as the defense lawyers in a class mock trial in which Mao Zedongwas charged with crimes against the people of China. To Mrs. Krawets dismay, legal wranglingcaused the mock trial to last two weeks, even though she had planned for it to take three days, untilit was resolved by a split decision, with the jury voting 6 guilty and 6 innocent. More important thanthe result was the experience of friendship and shared learning. We each had a great deal of funpreparing questions for the witnesses and planning our cross examinations, and after the trial weremained good friends. Tenth grade would be a notable year. Robert introduced me to Ashley and Tiffany, our classmates inEnglish. The four of us had a great time making our first home movie, based on the allegory Redwall,at Roberts house. Our filming day coincided with a snowstorm, so the outside scenes were hilarious. Plus, when we jumped up against the side of Robs house, we knocked down some books off a shelfinside. In the end, we all had a great laugh watching our final product. In March, Tiffany invited me toher Sweet Sixteen birthday party, the first major social occasion that I had attended in years. Last fall Tiffany and Ashley convinced me to go to the Homecoming dance, and I began to realize allthe fun that life has to offer. It was only natural that the group of us had an even better time at ourJunior Prom. I must admit that if I had never met them, I would have missed out on the completeexperience of a truly special occasion. On Halloween we all went trick-or-treating in Ashleysneighborhood, with Robert dressed as an outrageous mime, and I in the less exotic costume of acarpetbagger. That night we took a trip through the haunted house; we were blinded by the strobelight in the basement, and scared out of our wits when a ghost jumped out of a fake coffin andstarted up a chain-saw. Now, as the first to have a drivers license, Ive become the chauffeur todances, movies, and restaurants. As one might guess, Tiff, Rob and Ashley have all exerted a positive influence on me. My senior yearis full of group projects, after school activities, and companionship with friends that all had itsbeginning with a humorous classmate in the ninth grade. Although I still spend significant time onschoolwork, I enjoy life much more, and my grades remain high. Friendship is one of the great giftsof life, and Robert, Tiffany, and Ashley have helped me to fully enjoy it.
