The Prohibition Party essays
The Prohibition Party essays When you hear Prohibition you probably think of the 1920s and the eighteenth amendment, which was a failure, but it is most likely that you have never heard of the political party called the Prohibition Party who was behind the prohibition of intoxicating liquors. The Prohibition Party was organized in 1869; their chief aim was, and still is, the abolition of the liquor traffic (Stanwood). On September 1, 1869 five hundred men and women delegates gathered in Farewell Hall Chicago Ill. to form the new political party. The Prohibition Party is the oldest of the third parties. On its first national convention in Columbus Ohio February 22, 1872 only nine states were represented at the convention (www.antisaloon). James Black, a Pennsylvanian, was nominated for president of the political party (Stanwood). In its early years the party was strongest in Ohio and New York, holding the balance of power in the latter in the presidential election of 1884(Britannica). Candidates appeared in every presidential campaign, but they never won an elector. That goes to show that the public doesnt agree with the values of the Prohibition Party. The peak of its popular support was reached in 1892 with 271,000 votes, and the low ebb in 1928 with a total of 20,000(Stanwood). It is only logical that the party would shrink in size and supporters due to the eighteenth amendment not working. In 1896 the money management was questionable and the party temporarily split up. Through its educational activities and its strong appeal to the moral sentiment of the people, the party exerted an influence for a more effective governmental policy toward the liquor problem (www.antisaloon). While its primary object has been the prohibition of the manufacture and sale of intoxicating liquors, it has also sparked other political, economic and social reforms, many of which have been backed up by the major ...

Examples of Covalent Bonds and Compounds
Examples of Covalent Bonds and Compounds These are examples of covalent bonds and covalent compounds. Covalent compounds also are known as molecular compounds. Organic compounds, such as carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids, are all examples of molecular compounds. You can recognize these compounds because they consist of nonmetals bonded to each other. PCl3 - phosphorus trichlorideCH3CH2OH - ethanolO3 - ozoneH2 - hydrogenH2O - waterHCl - hydrogen chlorideCH4 - methaneNH3 - ammoniaCO2 - carbon dioxide So, for example, you would not expect to find covalent bonds in a metal or alloy, such as silver, steel, or brass. You would find ionic rather than covalent bonds in a salt, such as sodium chloride. What Determines Whether a Covalent Bond Forms? Covalent bonds form when two nonmetallic atoms have the same or similar electronegativity values. So, if two identical nonmetals (e.g., two hydrogen atoms) bond together, they will form a pure covalent bond. When two dissimilar nonmetals form bonds (e.g., hydrogen and oxygen), they will form a covalent bond, but the electrons will spend more time closer to one type of atom than the other, producing a polar covalent bond.

Alternative Health Paradigms Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Alternative Health Paradigms - Essay Example gathering scientific knowledge but also with establishing institutions for the production of scientific knowledge free inherently from ideological biases. The technological dimension of science has been apparent in how science has bred and has interlinked with technology for economic uses and benefits. These dimensions were also temporally successive in that Western science was borne out of philosophical study which emphasized the requirement of empirical investigation and rationalization. Science in its nascent stages was more on shaping its characteristically Western attitude of objectification and reductionism; that is, scientific truths were either derived from viewing Nature as an object for manââ¬â¢s benefit or from the deconstructive analysis of knowledge. Subsequent philosophies of Western science shifted its focus from experimental results to experimental processes. Although Jamison did not point it out explicitly, one can infer that the institutionalization of science was borne out of the early scientific communityââ¬â¢s shift from its study of the results of experimentation to the study of the process of experimentation. This segued into the production of knowledge by means of formulating hypothesis and carrying out the experimentation to verify and produce new kn owledge. With science out in the open, its progress escalated and the production of knowledge led to new knowledge that can be of economic advantage; Western science has thus come to where it is now ââ¬â a commodity. Criticism has dogged Western science from the time of its inception and up to the present. Jamison (1994) narrowed down his analysis of the various criticisms to relevant issues pertaining to how the relativism between Western science and traditional knowledge apply to contemporary concerns. Jamison (1994) grouped the criticisms into three thematic categories: romantic critique, environmental critique, and feminist critique. The romantic critics claimed that Western science

Apple Inc. Total quality managemnt Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Apple Inc. Total quality managemnt - Term Paper Example Quality is can be defined as anything that is in accordance with the need of the time and up to the desired satisfaction level of customers and clients (Bose). Since the customers hold the position of pivot towards the success or failure of any organization, therefore definition of quality and its subsequent implementation is very vital for the survival of any organization. The total Quality management is a separate discipline in the field of management which if implemented in the appropriate manner ensures productivity and desired results. The scope of T.Q.M is very broad and it takes into account all the necessary components of the organizational structure and thereby highlights the areas of improvement and areas of strength. The concept of T.Q.M has introduced new dimensions in the field of management and industry businesses and it has ended the old culture of dependencies on each other. T.Q.M allows adoption of a framework which ensures independence of various components of the system. The prime goal behind the T.Q.M is increased productivity and customer satisfaction (Grigoroudis and Siskos). It provides a detailed descriptive method of adopting and implementing it. This concept is equally implacable to the services as well as product manufacturing industries. In recent times many industries have benefited from its implementation. Apple Inc being an international brand is no exception to this rule and the definition of quality and its implication equally applies to this organization. Apple enjoys the name of a market leader amongst its competitors. Whatever has been achieved by Apple Inc is the result of adherence to the total quality management. It has ensured that each of the three necessary components of the T.Q.M are present in the organization and its products (Blocher). Apple is confronted with continuous challenge in form of the block of competitors both in the domain of mobile phones and operating systems and computers. According to Wall

A Study in Scarlet Essay Example for Free
A Study in Scarlet Essay The great author Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle was born on the 22nd May 1859 in Edinburgh Scotland. He had graduated with a degree in medicine at Edinburgh University in 1881. His first short story was published in1879 however the first mystery featuring Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson, A Study in Scarlet, was not until 1887. He had married twice and fathered five children. Conan Doyle had died in 1930. People are drawn to the Sherlock Holmes mystery as Conan Doyle is able to make the reader feel part of the story. The suspense and tension in his stories raise questions in the readers mind. This piece of course work will trace why Conan Doyle writings are popular in the 21st century. One key feature that helped the popularity of Sherlock Holmes stories is Conan Doyles use of language, style of writing and its simplicity. In the man with the twisted lip, Mr. Boone was a horrific looking beggar described as a broad wheel from an old scar ran right across it from an old scar ran right across it from eye to chin, and by contraction had turned up one side of the upper lip, so that three teeth were exposed in a perpetual snarl. A shock of very bright red hair grew low over his eyes and forehead. Conan Doyles use of descriptive language enables the reader to put together a picture of this revolting beggar. In the Red Headed League John Clay, also known as Vincent Spaulding, the criminal had asked to be called with respect Have the goodness also, when you address me always say sir and please. The use of language to introduce humour can be picked up from such comments. Also the idea that a red headed man had died and he wanted to give his inheritance to any other red headed man. Conan Doyle starts to put questions in the readers mind Why would someone want to do this? This seems virtually impossible and farfetched; such reference continually adds flavour to his writing. In the speckled band Dr. Roylott tried to threaten Sherlock Holmes and called him names I know you, you scoundrel! I have heard of you before. You are Holmes, the meddler Holmes, the busybody Holmes the Scotland Yard Jack-In-Office. Through dialogue we are able to deduce the character of Dr. Grimsby Roylott and his aggressive attitude towards people. The reader begins to understand why Helen stoner was afraid of her step father and had come to Holmes without his permission. Sherlock Holmes was able to speak fluent Latin omne ignotum pro magnifico; in the Victorian era you had to be well educated to be able to articulate a word of Latin. Conan Doyle has used this technique to show the reader Holmes accomplishments and status in society. Language plays a very important role in all Conan Doyles stories which in many ways have added to the never ending success. It has helped to transform the stories the stories into pleasant readings for a wide range of audiences. In all the stories a similar pattern seems to emerge which helps create the perfect recipe for a mystery. The stories unfold in the most unusual way leaving the reader intrigued up to the very end. The themes in Conan Doyles stories are directed towards acts of injustice, crimes, the clever villains and innocent victims; all spiced with greed. In the speckled band the victim was Helen stoner, who had come to seek help relating to the sudden death of her sister Julia. The villain to the readers surprise was Dr. Grimsby Roylott. Mrs. Stoner, mother of Helen and Julia Stoner, had received not less than 1000 pounds a year she gave this money to Dr. Roylott. a certain annual sum should be allowed to each daughter after marriage; due to Dr. Roylotts selfish needs he was responsible for the death of Julia and attempt to murder Helen. In the red headed league Mr. Jabez Wilson had consulted Sherlock Holmes to look into an advert that seemed peculiar. Mr. Jabez Wilson had taken a job because it offered double a normal wage, 4 pound a week. To the readers it seemed a shock that Vincent Spaulding, who was the loyal employee, had been the criminal John Clay. John clay had planned to steal the French napoleons from the bank. He was a con man hell crack a crib in Scotland one week, and be raising money to build an orphanage in Cornwall the next. In the man with the twisted lip Mrs. Neville StClair, the victim, had approached Holmes because she needed help finding her husband. Boone, the beggar, was able to earn 700 pounds a year where as Mr. Neville StClair, a journalist, earned two pounds a week. Mr. Neville StClair was the victim of his own deeds as he was not able to meet the expectation of society within the Victorian era. In the 21st century many people are not able to find time to read long novels. Conan Doyles Sherlock Holmes stories are short and simple to read, anyone can find time for them. You can pick up a story and read it on your way to work or school. The stories start in a similar way; we are first introduced to the innocent victims who are always reassured by Sherlock Holmes with his sympatric and caring nature and in most cases in the company of Dr. Watson. There is always a mention of the residence of Sherlock Holmes. This is to create a make believe situation in the readers mind. The setting is always dark and gloomy when the client comes to seek for advice; this gives a cosy and calm atmosphere. Conan Doyle was taught how to make deductions about patients by observing them closely; this skill was transferred to his stories and injected into his main character Sherlock Holmes. Holmes carries out his investigation using simple means. His use of knowledge allows him to give an insight in the red headed league. Vincent Spaulding had worked for half wage; he was always diving down into the cellar like a rabbit and he was the one who showed Mr. Jabez Wilson the advert. When Sherlock Holmes went to ask for directions, under pretence just to come in contact with the so called assistant Vincent Spaulding, he was reassuring himself that what he was thinking was actually possible. Holmes was able to conclude on the note that Vincent Spaulding and John Clay was the same person. Sherlock Holmes has a special essence which draws the reader towards him. Sherlock Holmes is known as one of the worlds greatest detectives. His mission was always to help gain justice for his clients. He is an individual who is never after money but more interested in solving the crime my profession is its own reward. He was a guardian angel to all and everyone had total trust in his skill. There are two sides of Holmes, one which is the never quitting crime solver and other which just likes to relax. He also has many weaknesses cocaine injections and all the little weaknesses. In these three stories Conan Doyle has used Watson to narrate the story. We are able to learn what is in the Dr. Watsons mind towards Holmes. John Watson is a very close friend and assistant of Holmes. He has full trust in friends skills and has the same thirst for mysteries as Holmes; Your cases have indeed been of the greatest interest to me The mystery in most cases concludes on the note that Sherlock Holmes has solved the case. In the speckled band Helen stoner was able to live without fear of her stepfather. This pattern of a constant happy ending allows the reader to look forward to the end and they know that they can always rely on Holmes. In the 21st century Conan Doyle still rubs shoulder with many other famous detective stories such as murder she wrote and C. S. I. None of them however can beat Sherlock Holmes!!! Conan Doyle has out done himself. The Sherlock Holmes stories are suitable for all age groups. Worldwide he is an accomplished writer as the stories have been translated into over 60 different languages. Even today the famous residence 221b baker street is still known as the fictional home of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. Now it is the site of the Sherlock Holmes museum. Such tributes have helped keep the stories alive to date. Mirror Dance :: essays research papers
Mirror Dance There are some paintings that simply capture the essence of life within their still frames such as the painting of the "Mirror Dance" in R.A. Salvatoreââ¬â¢s novel Crystal Shard. The painting depicts two characters set in a darkened background. The faint light of the moon casts shadows down upon the grassy floor on which the sylvan warrior and human assassin battle. The glimmer of the moon reflects upon a small, nearby pool of water. A silver sparkle in the distance marks the nearby city of Silvery Moon. A sneer of hatred is etched upon the face of the human assassin. His eyes glimmer with a taint of red to depict his blazing internal rage. The clothing worn by the human is black as the night, much like the hooded garbs of ancient Japanese Ninja, the only hint of color coming from his weapons. One of his hands holds a vicious blade, blackened like the coal inside a fireplace. Small flecks of crimson blood decorate the tip of the blade, matching the fresh cut upon the arm of the elf. The legs of the human are crouched, as if he were ready any moment to leap savagely at his opponent. His secondary hand hosts a second blade, much smaller than the other sword, his hand holds the secondary blade inward, as if to flick it out at his adversary. The elven warrior casts an extremely different perspective upon the viewer. His eyes twinkle with the soft moonlight, and his smile welcomes the fierce battle. The warriorââ¬â¢s robes flutter in a soft breeze, shining in the glow of the night. Even with his arm bleeding red from a cut which must have been inflicted by the assassin, the warrior still maintains a look of regality. The crown adorning the top of his head, marks his royal heritage. The weapons commanded by the warrior seem to take on a life of their own, his sword dancing to meet the twin blades of the assassin while a radiance resonating from his shield, cast light upon the foe who prefers the stealth of night. Nature lies still for the battle between the two adversaries. The birds in flight, bend away from the loud clashing of swords, and the deer hide amongst the trees in the forest. The people of the distant town of Silvery Moon watch from their doorways, huddled close to keep the chill of the night from freezing their bones. They look upon the scene with deep interest, the smiles of the children obviously cast upon their elven hero.

Cost Cutting Essay
Most of us spend more than we need to for a lot of things. If you really can afford luxuries such as gourmet teas or designer clothing and still save for your future, youââ¬â¢re lucky. However, if youââ¬â¢re struggling to meet the financial goals youââ¬â¢ve set on your retirement roadmap, itââ¬â¢s time to look for ways to cut expensesââ¬âdaily, monthly, and long-term. Start by seeing if youââ¬â¢d benefit from either of these big cost-cutting strategies: â⬠¢If youââ¬â¢re paying high interest on a mortgage and you plan to stay in your home for a few years, consider refinancing.à Be sure to do your home- work to avoid closing costs that might make the move less attractive financially. â⬠¢Reduce your credit card debt. Call the bank and try to negotiate lower finance charges. Then pay down the debt as fast as you can, starting with the high-interest debt. (See AARPââ¬â¢s Tip Sheet, ââ¬Å"Managing Debt. â⬠) Itââ¬â¢s easy to spend money without realizing how much it adds up to over a week, a month or a year. So, to make other cuts in your expenses, try reviewing what habits, like eating lunch in a restaurant every day or buying expensive clothes, can add up to in the course of a year. Here are some places to look for cuts. Meals and Entertainment Americans love to eat out, whether itââ¬â¢s a daily break- fast at a pricey coffee shop or fast-food dinners when you feel too tired to cook. Keep track of where youââ¬â¢re eating your meals and what they cost. Bringing your lunch to work and cooking your meals for dinner are good ways to reduce food expenses on a regular basis. Movie fans can save money by renting DVDs, instead of paying admission to the theater and eating that expensive popcorn. Household and Transportation Expensesà Cable television, phone serviceââ¬âincluding your cell phoneââ¬â and Internet service can add up to a tidy sum every month. Make sure you have the most economical plans available. If youââ¬â¢re in an area with more than one provider, comparison-shop. Energy costs are climbing and will probably continue to do so. Do an energy review of your home. Plug up drafty windows and doors with weather-stripping, insulate them with blinds or curtains, and then turn down the winter temperature inside by a couple of degrees. Consider solar heating and cooling if itââ¬â¢s feasible where you live. If you have central air, try to use it less. Install ceiling fans in some rooms, so you donââ¬â¢t have to cool the entire house. During the summer months, avoid using the clothes dryer, dishwasher, etc. during peak hours to lower your energy bill. Your biggest transportation expenses probably come from one or more vehicles. Here are some ways to cut back on those costs: â⬠¢Car-pool to work with neighbors or colleagues. â⬠¢Use public transportation. â⬠¢Talk to your insurance company about ways you can lower your rate. On the highway, save money on gas by driving 55 miles per hour instead of faster. Shopping Thoughtful planning, before you shop, is a good way to reduce expensive impulse buying. Whether youââ¬â¢re going to the grocery store, shopping for holiday gifts, or looking for a new pair of shoes or a party outfit, make a list and decide what you can afford to spend ahead of timeââ¬âand donââ¬â¢t buy something unless you really need it. In the supermarket, read the unit prices: is it cheaper to buy a 16-ounce box of crackers for $3. 0, or 12 ounces for $3. 10? For larger expenses such as a winter coat or a washing machine, check prices at more than one store before you make a decision. You should also check out thrift shops, especially if you know of one in an upscale neighborhood where you might get some good bargains. For Internet purchases, in addition to comparison-shopping on prices, check shipping charges. Some sites make you pay the whole cost; others will offer a deal to entice you to buy from them.

My relationship with God
As a start for developing a closer relationship with God, I decided that I wanted to try daily devotionals and Bible reading. I considered finding a devotional guide, but instead decided to begin by simply reading the Bible for myself. I thought about finding a daily devotional guide, but chose instead to start my devotional readings by simply reading the New Testament and letting God speak to me as He determined not as some other person might have been inspired. My decision was partially based on a need for this to be a personal journey and a knowledge that many people who attempt to read the Bible begin at the beginning and get discouraged when they reach the histories of the Books of Law. And, as a Christian, I believe the importance of the New Testament speaks for itself. This was a particularly difficult task for me. Choosing a time to read regularly and coupling it with prayer for understanding and meditation to determine the meaning of the scriptures was very difficult.I discov ered that the first thing in the morning was not a good time for me to try to read my Bible. Too often, I was overly tempted to hit the snooze button and often did not find my concentration level where it should be to really understand the scriptures, even though most of it was familiar territory. I then tried to do my devotional reading at the end of the day and found that too was a bad idea. Some days exhaustion seemed to bull me away from my studies in an untimely manner and I decided that too was a bad time. Instead I chose to set aside an hour every morning just before lunch. This seemed to be the best time for me to be able to devote my attention to the Bible and not be distracted. I set an alarm to let me know when I could be done and then tuned out all distractions. In the three weeks, I managed to read through all of the gospel of Matthew and get started in Mark without feeling like it was a chore. As the time wore on, I found myself looking forward to my daily devotional mo re than I had in the beginning and found it was easier to maintain once I found the appropriate time. Intercessory prayer as a devotional tool also appealed to me.Like many churches, the church I grew up in had a prayer chain devoted to praying for those in need. Remembering the peace and joy that came from praying for another person without any goal or personal motivation lead me to choose intercessory prayer Practicing this devotional method reminded me of the need to be more worried about others than I am about myself. I thought this was going to be my favorite devotional form, but I found that it wasnââ¬â¢t. Too often it felt like I was pushing my will onto God instead of allowing His will to work through me.The other two devotional forms I chose were praise singing and random good deeds. These are the two forms of devotion which I believe had the biggest impacts on my life. I chose to do my devotional singing while in the car. I turned off the radio and began singing hymns i n the car and immediately noticed a change in my attitude. I was no longer as willing to spout off angrily at other drivers, no longer feeling the need to drive unreasonably fast and no longer impatient in traffic. Changing my heart through song made my daily commutes easier and relieved tension in my life.I found myself with an sincerely improved attitude and a greater desire to praise God for the miraculous things he was working in my life and int eh world around me. The author says that the practice of doing good deeds simply for the sake of doing them is a good thing because it reinforces the image that we want non-believers to have of Christians. I found that the biggest impact it had on me was that this is a manner I believe Christians should act in. By committing daily random acts of kindness I felt better about myself.I felt that I was behaving more the way that Christ would want me to behave. My random acts of kindness included letting others go first in the grocery line an d putting coins in parking meters. Finally, last week, I also purchased a small quantity of stuffed animals and placed them randomly on the windshields of cars at the doctorââ¬â¢s office. I believe that the act may have helped just one other person to get through a rough day and that is what God has called each of us to do. These actions are things that I will continue.I believe that the daily Bible readings will be the most difficult to consistently maintain, but I also believe it may be the most important for my continued spiritual growth. The praise singing and random good deeds are easy to maintain because they have an immediate uplifting effect. The Bible reading requires the biggest commitment, but a better understanding of Godââ¬â¢s purpose for me should be found in His word. I believe that the intercessory prayer is also going to continue to be a part of my life, though I am interested in determining how I can best pray without feeling like I am placing demand on my Lo rd.

Hysteria and Emotional Repression in The Crucible essays
Hysteria and Emotional Repression in The Crucible essays It is as if the Devil himself has cast a spell of dark magic upon the village. The desperate struggle to keep witchcraft in check and save the society backfires. The horrific end result of the hysteric witch-hunt is the hanging of nineteen people, and that destroyed lives of many more. The fervently religious Puritans of the 17th century Massachusetts and all their rules and beliefs implode with baseless accusations of a girl whose only goal is self-satisfaction. What kind of crack could there have been in a rigid theocracy that shattered it into pieces? What motivated the people of Salem to accuse their neighbors and family members of witchcraft? The Crucible depicts the events that lead to the hanging of nineteen innocent people and the destruction of a society. From a closer look at the story gives the readers an insight into the emotional repression that chains the people of Salem, and the massive hysteria that results when that chain is broken. Teenage girls dancing naked around a fire reveals the inner feelings of sexual lust, a feeling that cannot be expressed freely in a Puritan society. It is important, as the aim of this essay is to look at the events in Salem with a psychologists perspective, to understand the reasons why these girls acted the way they did. The society which Abigail and other girls are confined in is a repressive, limiting, and orthodox society; furthermore, the female gender was regarded as a lesser sex, as women were not able to contact God directly. In a highly religious society, the inability to speak directly with God meant inferiority. For a group of girls going through adolescence, this kind of discrimination and repression must have been a cause of great stress (Hannak). Unlike today, there were no counselors to talk to about their problems, and adults (both men and women alike) avoided talking about sensitive issues such as sex with their teenage children. Finding themselves ...

Technologies for Treating Hazardous Waste Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words
Technologies for Treating Hazardous Waste - Essay Example Sanitary landfill is the used of an area as an isolation place of the solid waste until the danger of the waste is reduced. This kind of treating solid waste can be successful if the area is large and the isolation is good (ââ¬Å"Solid Waste,â⬠n.d.). Gasification on the other hand is the exposure to high temperature/extreme heat with the use of oxygen to decompose the waste. It has the advantages of lessening the size of waste and makes the transportation of waste easier. This is a type of incineration that has no contribution to air pollution. Composting is one of the oldest ways to treat solid waste. It is used specifically to solid wastes that decompose. It makes the area of decomposition very appropriate to the waste, so that decomposition occurs faster (ââ¬Å"Solid Waste Managementâ⬠n.d.). From the said technologies, gasification is the best. It can be observed that it has more advantages. It lessens the volume of waste in a shorter time because it reduces the waste on the spot. It also does not contribute pollution to nature especially to air unlike other thermal treatment. It brings back energy. And lastly it demands less space compared to sanitary
